iPhone warnings

In the warnings on RF Exposure, Apple state that users should:

‘Carry iPhone at least 5mm away from your body to ensure exposure levels remain at or below the as-tested levels.’

Not only does their advertisement show iPhones being used directly against the head, but it also shows the phone being carried next to the pocket, in direct contravention of Apple’s published warnings.

Finally, although Apple do not advise children not to use their phones, the SAR test is conducted against a ‘phantom’ which represents a fully grown, large bodied male and their advertisement shows not only children using an iPhone, but also using it directly against the head.

In the light of the French Government’s recent report into mobile phone users exceeding their exposure limits when phones are used in the ‘real world’, in other words next to the head or carried next to the body, Apple’s advertisement is a worrying endorsement of unsafe practices.  This is compounded by the use of a very child using an iPhone directly against the head.

Other iPhones have carried different warnings and the wording has changed.  Apple warnings about the iPhone 4 draw attention to only using carrying cases or holders that do not have metal in them - this is because microwave is attenuated by metal.  Logically, connecting a metal jack, which is attached to a metal cored cable, to the phone means that the cable will allow microwave frequency to travel up it, straight to the user’s head.

When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 mm (5/8 inch) away from the body, and only use carrying cases, belt clips, or holders that do not have metal parts and that maintain at least 15 mm (5/8 inch) separation between iPhone and the body.

The warnings on iPhones continue and reinforce the message that these phones are not considered to be safe if carried or held or used next to the body:

iPhone’s SAR measurement may exceed the FCC exposure guidelines for body-worn operation if positioned less than 15 mm (5/8 inch) from the body

Cool Call is designed to allow mobile phone users to utilise their corded headsets and headphones and prevent microwave from travelling up the cable; whilst distancing the phone from the body.
