Insurance Companies

Insurance companies take a pragmatic, one could almost say ‘common sense’ approach to their policies and what they will cover.  It is therefore noteworthy that many refuse to provide cover for cell phone companies or cell phone manufacturers.  These companies will not cover health problems caused by EMF emitted by phones.

It is also interesting that they classify electromagnetic radiation as a ‘poison’ or a ‘pollutant’ in the cases where they do provide insurance cover.

‘Owning, buying or selling a property with EMFs nearby can turn into a financial disaster - particularly as more science and studies further demonstrate rising health concerns in addition to potential diminution in value claims.’ - the Willis insurance report

“The Electromagnetic Fields Exclusion (Exclusion 32) is a General Insurance Exclusion and is applied across the market as standard. The purpose of the exclusion is to exclude cover for illnesses caused by continuous long-term non-ionising radiation exposure i.e. through mobile phone usage.” CFC Underwriting LTD in London, the UK agent for Lloyd’s

Canadian ProSurance Architects & Engineers Policy

In 2015 The General Exclusions section of their Canadian ProSurance Architects & Engineers Policy Document places EMF on the same footing as Asbestos: a total exclusion on liability for all EMF radiation.

“GENERAL INSURANCE EXCLUSIONS: Electromagnetic fields directly or indirectly arising out of, resulting from or contributed to by electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic radiation, electromagnetism, radio waves or noise.”

AT&T insurance does not cover damage caused by ‘pollutants’, which now included EMF

  1. Loss caused by or resulting from the discharge, dispersal, seepage, migration, release or escape of Pollutants
  2. “Pollutants” means: Any solid, liquid, gaseous, or thermal irritant or contaminant including smoke, vapor, soot, fumes, acid, alkalis, chemicals, artificially produced electric fields, magnetic field, electromagnetic field, sound waves, microwaves, and all artificially produced ionizing or non- ionizing radiation and waste. Waste includes materials to be recycled, reconditioned or reclaimed.” (pg. 4)

Endorsement to Exclude Cover

For some insurance policies an endorsement is added which excludes cover for ‘electromagnetic radiation and electromagnetic fields.  The document below, which can be read in full by clicking on it states that:

Without limiting or expanding the term “pollutants” as used in any policy issued by us, the following sentence is included in the definition of “pollutants”:

“Electromagnetic fields and/or electromagnetic radiation” means electromagnetic fields, “electromagnetic radiation” ...
